Smaller Whitewater / Downriver Playboard

8’6” x 34” x 6”

Freestyle your way down the local river, playing in pockets and holes along the way. A smaller version of the Atcha, the 86 is great for those wanting to surf in tighter pockets (like a playboat) and is a perfect fit for our smaller riders.

This innovative design is exceptionally agile and persistent in whitewater. The patent-pending Stompbox™ fin system retracts inside the board upon contact with unanticipated rocks allowing for running the shallowest of rivers year-round. So hop on an Atcha 86. You’ll be amazed at how an 8’6”x 34” board IS enough. Go with the company that is leading the charge in whitewater SUP and inflatable technology.  Like the price? Good.

After obsessive prototyping, the 2017 Atcha satisfies our desire to make the best even better.

Product Description

A design so good, we had to make two!

The Atcha 86 is the smaller version of the 9’6” Atcha giving you the option to ride a board tailored specific to you and your adventure. Just like the 9’6″ Atcha, the 8’6″ is designed to intuitively correct itself when your line is thrown. How? The 2017 Atcha 86 condenses its center of control with a unique outline and precise balance point.

The Full Rocker gives you punchy playtime without nose diving. And with one simple step, sharp lines of the swallowtail have you surfing from the back. Bring along gear without compromising performance with our 6 rigging points that are now soft and centralized and give you the choice of gear location. And your run can go undisturbed with the Hala patent pending retractable Stompbox™ center fin.

This board is full of design surprises to make your adventure better.

Board Tech Details – We’re obsessed to deliver the best!

Full Rocker
The full rocker that curves from tip-to-tail combines with the short platform of the 86 for a punchy board in whitewater while fitting into pockets to surf on the fly. And it is ridiculously responsive regardless of where you stand on the board. Punch big holes, surf small pockets, and hop eddy fences like a pro. Learn more about Hala’s rockers
Core Construction™
These board can take a serious beating and you can keep on cruising with our burly Double-Layer Drop Stitch material. How do we make our boards so rugged? A second layer of thick, liquid PVC is poured over the raw drop stitch material for the best abrasion resistance available. Burly material for a burly board on your burly adventure. Learn more about Hala’s board.

Smaller Board Size
Though small, it is mighty! The 86 fits into the smallest surf pockets but still has enough volume and stability to support the 350 lb rider. Learn more about Hala’s board sizes.
Unique Outline
This gives you one precise center of control when combined with the rocker. The outline tapers from the nose to the widepoint, allowing for reduced leverage on the front of your board. Smaller shoulders create more directional control and prevent you from pearling.  And the tail steps down aggressively so the board stays agile and easy to sink and rise — no “tank ass”! Learn more about Hala’s outlines.

Precise Balance Point
A board that intuitively corrects itself. The widest point of the outline, near the back, meets the rocker’s natural balance point for an exact center of control. It makes the board extremely responsive and allows you to surf the tail with one quick, easy step back.

Sharp Outline Swallowtail
Gives you two balance points in the tail, instead of one, so the board resists tipping. It also gives a bit of more bite to your turns while surfing from the back. Learn more about Hala’s Shapes

Patent Pending Stompbox™ Retractable Fin
No more supermanning off your board! The fin retracts into the board upon contact with unanticipated rocks for an undisturbed run, allowing you to paddle the shallowest rivers and creekiest lines, year round. See the Stompbox™ in action here.
6 Soft & Centralized Rigging Points
Rig your gear closer to you on the deck pad for heavier loads or choose to place lighter loads near the front.
Soft rigging gives you the durability of our triple reinforced metal d-rings without knuckle busting.
Centralized rigging moves the rigging point closer to the deck pad and can be safer due to reduced space between rigging straps and loaded gear.

D-Ring Rigging Point Under The Nose
Tow your board from the D-ring rigging point located under the nose. This pushes the force and weight up to make towing easier and faster.

Leash D-Ring
A triple-reinforced D-ring is located on the back of the board to attach your leash onto.  But remember, using a leash properly requires knowledge and attention.

Side Cloth Handles
Quickly grab your board and get back on when you swim.

Foot index
Located just before the stomp pad is raised EVA on your deck pad. It is a small, centralized rectangle so you can easily step your foot back to the center of the board without ever taking your eyes off the water.

Stomp Pad
A 1.5” stomp pad allows for precise control and maneuverability of your board.

Travel-Ready Board
A board that can go anywhere, this board packs up and rolls out with you. Combined with any of our travel paddles, you’ll have the ultimate, portable setup for adventure.

3-Year Warranty
The best in the business. We’re confident about the capability and durability of our boards. That’s why we’re willing to back it with an industry-leading 3-year warranty. We’ve got your back!

I am in LOVE the Hala Atcha! It’s nuts how compact and stable this board is. The deck pad has such a great grip, but is still so comfy on bare feet. Not to mention that awesome flip towards the back that makes you pivot turn like a boss!

Because it’s so easy to travel with, I took the ATCHA with me to Chile last October. I’m so comfortable on this board, I was doing handstands on glacial water in 50 degrees, no fear. What an experience! Halas are the best inflatables out there–they got the market on lock, y’all! #halaback

There is nothing this board cant handle. I can white water clean lines that a narrower board never. The rocker profile and nose shape let this board cut through everything the river throws at you. The stability is next level, and the length make it extremely maneuverable. The raised deck pad make pivot turns easy and smooth. Even though its a white water board it is great in mellower and even flat water, just tweak your fin setup and you are ready to tour.

I’ve only done one run on this deck, and it blew me away. Nimble, stable, and an incredible surfer; a must-have.

      Hi Jim,

This years Atcha is AWESOME! Something we’ve worked towards for years. Thanks for taking the time to leave your feedback. Happy surfing!

This is one of my all time favorite boards. Super versatile and fun and easy to transport. Love this board in the ocean for long paddles with baby waves as well as for flat water or taking on whitewater missions. It’s so wide you can even do yoga and AcroYoga on it if that’s your thing!

Because I travel a lot and am always driving somewhere to launch my SUPs (i.e. I don’t have a boat house on the water to store my gear in). I really appreciate the smaller length of this board in addition to all of its awesome features and functional design. If you are looking for an all around high performance whitewater board this is my pick for the paddler on the go.

This is my go to board for any whitewater. This year’s design punches through standing waves, swivels in and out of Eddies and crushes every line I aim at. I was so nervous about any changes that I kept my board from last year and of course, this one is even better! The nose is a little blunter so it doesn’t send you offline as aggressively and the tail is narrower allowing for faster turns when weighted in the back. As always, the side to side stability is so stable that you can really carve in and out of Eddies. This board is also a dream to practice Stand Up Paddle Yoga on in the Lakes. The stomp box and ability to use several fin options has opened up the season so that we can run barely runnable runs in the Spring and Fall. I have been delighted more than once to be still standing after running incredibly tight lines and over rocks. The 8’6″ length of the board is perfect for me as a 5’8″ female. This board is also super fun to surf on those small holes you run into. I take this board everywhere! There is nothing Not to Love!

I love my Atcha 86! I’m a small paddler (5′ tall), and it’s perfectly sized for me. It gives me good stability in rough water, yet it is still light enough for portaging independently. It’s incredibly maneuverable too! I love having the Stomp Box fin for avoiding unseen rocks, and I like having the ability to customize the side fin set-up. Really appreciate having the side handles for flipping it back over and getting on quickly after a fall. Thanks for making a great whitewater board that’s not a behemoth!

  7. 5 out of 5

I’m loving the new 8’6″. Its ultra sporty for low water and down river surfing and has a great width and re-designed shape to stomp big water. This board is really fun in and out of eddies and the StompBox retractable fin makes Browns early season or Lower Blue late season really fun.

  8. 5 out of 5

This board pivots on a dime, so smooth and maneuverable in rapids of any size. From shallow tech sections, to deep Class IVs the Atcha 86 can handle it. And the wide base makes it just as stable in flatwater as in whitewater. Though not technically a surf board, I have caught a wave or two when its high water. I have even been known to load up the dog, the camping gear and the fishing rod and set out on overnight floats on this board. It really is my quiver board!

  9. 5 out of 5

What else can I say except, awesome? Since the moment I stepped on this board it has exceeded my expectations. It rages through whitewater, responds instantly to rider input, and surfs on the fly. I thought at 6′ tall and 180lbs it might be a bit small for me, but I couldn’t have been more wrong. It could easily handle a rider bigger than myself. The design changes implemented for 2017 have made this board even more approachable and heightened performance. If you’re looking to punch the fun button on your whitewater paddling, look no further!

The Hala Atacha 86 is AMAZING! I received this board a couple of weeks ago, and it has already become my go to board for all of my East Coast river runs. The new design tweaks are impressive! The cloth handles are helpful when you need to grab the board if you bail on a rowdy rapid. The rocker is incredible for both punching through hydraulics and fitting on river waves. In fact, the rigidity, shape, and rocker make this board an impressive river surfer in addition to it’s river running abilities. The board is wide enough to be stable, but designed to gain enough speed to help break through sizable holes. And then there is the stombpox, which means you can feel confident running even shallow runs. I love everything about this board. I also love how Hala focuses on small details that make using the board even better. High quality soft D-rings make a big difference! The tow D-ring makes rescue maneuvers faster and less complicated. The soft rigging points are durable and yet painless to fall on! And then there is the travel bag, which means you are automatically ready to take this board anywhere in the world when it arrives. If you are looking for a river runner, I can’t think of a better board!

Less IS more. I was a little skeptical of the size at first (6’2″, 185#) and i thought I might be happier on a larger board. I was mistaken. The 8’6 is maneuverable, responsive, yet surprisingly stable. Versatile and durable stomp box fin system. This board is great fun. It will extend my paddle season with its low water rock dodging prowess but is also a hoot in big water. The smaller size makes it less susceptible to the forces of lateral and breaking waves. I am sticking lines that I never had before. Very happy with the construction and the customer support at HALA. Fantastic board.

I thought this board was to small when I first got it, Boy was in wrong. I just paddled some good class 2 with my 70lb dog. That’s a combined weight of 280lbs I couldn’t believe the stability it maintained. Durable Compact incredibly well designed!

  14. 5 out of 5

The Atcha 8-6 is a great downriver board that can handle class IV whitewater and shred the wave.

  15. 5 out of 5

With a perfect rocker, this board is a confidence builder for river running. When I am hitting the river, I don’t think twice…this is the board I go for. The only improvement I would make to this board it to have more time to ride it !

After 25 years staying away from water I had a revelation that it was time to go back. After seeing a few WW sup video it seem to fit my lifestyle very well, and living a five minute drive from a world class WW course and well known wave (Kananaskis River) I nerded out to find the best river ISUP I could and landed on the Atcha 86. EVERYONE told me no, too short you need the regular Atcha at least. I rarely listen to anyone, and had an idea brewing I had to follow, so stuck to my gun. After not paddling for so long I figured the learning curve would be huge, and maybe I would be able to hit the river at the end of the year/fall/ winter, our river runs all year. But After 2 weeks in freezing water everyday after getting my 86 I was walking the river looking for the best hole and waves to play on and harassing the crap out of everyone to grow a pair and come on the river. Now everyone wants one of those so called”too short” My climbing gear, bike and I will assume my skis, might be in early retirement for a while. This thing rocks everywhere, still lakes with the right fins set up, rock and roll windy day on the the same lake with the wind is howling and it breaks into 4 foot waves, downriver, standing wave, downind, I mean I’m thinking up new ways of using it because it dosn’t have a limit. I took it down a creek that usually is 2 feet wide and had swelled to 8 feet wide the other day, pretty sure that was a first and only descent of a ridiculous pinball vibe. The 86 survived. not my paddle or my face, but that’s another story. Now that I “know” what I’m doing (never stop learning tough) and have tried a few other ISUP, I have no idea why we don’t see only The Atcha 86 on the river. You guys built a tank, that handles like a dirt bike. Thank you, you changed my life

  17. 5 out of 5

This is by far my favorite board. It is lightweight yet strong. It is stable enough to withstand class 3 waters, practice handstands, yoga, and acrobatics. I have paddled to glaciers in Alaska, to the bioluminescent bay in Vieques, down rivers in New Zealand, and on expeditions in Hong Kong. Hala Atcha can easy carry two people with two butterknife paddles, basically transforming it into an adventure boat.

We also own a 9’6…. but the 8’6 is the one we travel with the most.

  18. 5 out of 5

The 86 is a great board for downriver and river surfing! Its been perfect for exploring whitewater in the PNW! I can catch waves on the fly or paddle fast to get away from a nasty river feature. Its nimble, yet stable and my go to board every time I get on the river! Love this board! I’ve even taken it out on the ocean and caught a few waist high waves with it. The stomp-box retractable fin, the rocker, the toughness, and rigidity make it the best board I’ve owned.

  19. 5 out of 5

I’ve been paddling the Hala Atcha for the last 6 months on various rivers (from low volume creeks to big volume runs) and these are some of the things I love:
    1. The rocker – makes running continuous section and climbing over holes / waves super easy. Also doesn’t slow the board down.
    2. Narrowing nose – Makes it way easier to switch and control the board if you are not using fins (low water).
    3. Versatility – It runs rivers and you can still manage a surf.
    4. Stability – Stable enough to move around on when running WW (changing stance).
