About Hala Gear

15 Years Building the Boards That Defined River SUP

In 2011, Hala Gear was founded in Steamboat Springs, Colorado with one obsessive goal: build an inflatable SUP that could actually handle a river. Not tolerate one. Handle one.

The boards on the market were designed for flatwater. Stable, fine for a lake, but the moment you put them in current, fins caught rocks, shapes lacked rocker, and designs worked against you. Nobody was building for whitewater. We decided to change that.

The First Board: The Hoss

The Hoss was the first Hala board, 6 inches thick and 35 inches wide, with enough volume and stability to hold its own in moving water. People thought it was crazy. River paddlers were used to narrow, nervous boards. A wide, stable inflatable on a river? Unconventional. But that stability-first philosophy, building paddlers a platform to succeed before asking them to push limits, is still the foundation of every Hala board today.

The Atcha: Setting the Standard

As paddlers leveled up on the Hoss, we went further. More than 50 prototypes and years of river testing produced the Atcha: a 9 ft 6 in x 36 in inflatable whitewater SUP with the pronounced river rocker, surf-inspired outline, and purpose-built dimensions that became the template the entire inflatable whitewater SUP industry eventually adopted. When you see another brand's whitewater SUP, you're often looking at something built to Atcha specs. In 2025, independent reviewers called it "quite possibly the pinnacle of design for intense whitewater paddling."

StompBox: Solving the Sport's Central Problem

Fins break on rocks. It's the central problem of river SUP, and for years the only answer was to avoid them or replace fins constantly. In 2015, we patented the StompBox retractable fin system, the first fin with active downward spring pressure that keeps it locked at full deployment through current, deflects cleanly off rocks, and snaps back before your next stroke. Competitors have built retractable fins since. None use spring pressure the way the StompBox does. US Patent 10,046,836. Now in its 2.5 generation, still setting the standard.
