First off, let me say that it’s just not worth it to mess around with cheap paddles, especially on the river. I tried that in the past and came to the conclusion that you really get what you pay for. The River Carbon HS is my new favorite paddle for river running. I had been using a Werner Session, which was a great, high-performance, durable paddle, but after a couple seasons I had gradually worn down the end of the blade on river rocks and I thought I’d try something different on a recommendation from very experienced river paddler. The main difference is the size of the blade. When I’m down in a low stance and really trying to dig in to enter or exit an eddy, the full blade is in the water and the added surface area makes a difference. When I’m in a normal paddling stance, it feels like a “normal” paddle, so win-win. The added surface area also helps with bracing. The more experience you get in whitewater, the better you get at putting your weight on your paddle to save falls. If you paddle is out of the water, you’re least stable, when it’s in the water it’s like a training wheel, so when it’s bigger, it just allows for more leverage and more chance of recovery when you get bucked around in whitewater. As for durability, so far, so good. I’ve done a lot of shallow river running in the few weeks I’ve had it, and it’s held up to the abuse as expected. It seems like the blade material might be less prone to flaking and delaminating than traditional woven fiberglass blades, but I’m pretty sure I’ll eventually wear down just about any material the way I paddle. The bright orange is also a great detail. I’ve had to help rescue one of my friend’s lost paddles in whitewater and an all-black shaft and t-grip is pretty hard to see. My only suggestion would be to offer a cut-to-fit length. I’m just about done experimenting with different paddle lengths, so a lighter, water-tight option would be nice. I’m still giving 5 stars because I think most people could really benefit from the adjustability and trying out different paddle lengths, and it’s nice to be able to adjust it for other people who might use it.
