Why I love to SUP and how I discovered it: I was looking for a new way to explore and enhance myself and my Minnesota State Park Project. Minnesota is filled with countless lakes, river, and creeks. I originally considered a few different avenues and kept coming back to an inflatable paddle board. I wanted something I could easily travel with at all times and access some remote area. Never being on a paddle board I ordered my Hala Nass, hit the water, and instantly fell in love. Nala, name I christened my board, sparked a new passion I didn’t know existed. I love finding new way to push my skills and ability on my SUP, which in turns progresses me forward in all aspects of my life. I am a SUP lifer for sure!

The body of water you’ll most likely find me on: If there is water I want to be on/in it. However, living in Minnesota you will see me out paddling lakes, rivers, creeks, ponds, and really anything I can find. I love to paddle with sunsets! Heck you might even spot me wake surfing Nala behind my buddie’s boat.

Which boards I’m riding? Which one is my favorite? I am currently riding Nala aka my Hala Nass 12 footer. We have tons of miles under our belt already and plenty more adventures to come. I do however, want to try out as many other boards as I can to have a true knowledge of the entire Hala lineup.

My next dream paddling adventure is: Hard to answer since I am in the early planning stages already. I don’t know if I want to give it away yet. I can say glaciers, icebergs, and midnight sun will be involved.

What I do when I am not paddling? I’m a mountain biker, photographer, hiker, camper, downhill skier, skateboarder, rock climber, Jeeper, kettlebeller, and really any extreme sport. I dabble in all sorts of activities that push my physical and mental “limits”. I also love movies, traveling, and assisting others with discovering the great outdoors and/or a new passion in life.

Why I love to SUP and how I discovered it…
I have been a board sports junky my entire life, SUP has been the next progression from skateboarding, snowboarding and surfing. SUP gives the paddler a unique perspective whether you’re coming down the river, ocean surfing or touring in the Carribean.

The body of water you’ll most likely find me on…
My ultimate joy on a SUP board is river surfing. I surf at the Montrose, CO whitewater park year around. If Glenwood Springs or Big Sur have high water you can find me surfing there.

Which boards I’m riding? Which one is my favorite? …
For river surfing the redesigned Hala Peno and the Hala MiliGram are my go to boards. The new Hala Peno is a revolutionary and responsive inflatable surf board in an ocean of underwhelming inflatable surfers. For whitewater I love my Hala Atcha 96 for it’s stability and surfy feel.

My next dream paddling adventure is…
Africa

What I do when I am not paddling?
When I’m not paddling I’ll be rock climbing in Indian Creek, snowboarding at Powderhorn, fussing with my latest batch of home brewed wine or playing with my pup.

Why I love to SUP and how I discovered it: I grew up on lake Michigan, but I moved to the Rockies in ’99. As a tried and true ski/climbing bum, I always missed the water. SUP has totally filled that void. Besides the obvious fun of charging hard whitewater, the sport is unreal for overall fitness. At the end of the day, the SUP community is what really takes it to another level. So tight, so welcoming and inclusive. everyone is there to support you and have a rad time.

The body of water you’ll most likely find me on: The Arkansas River its right outside my front door!

Which boards I’m riding? Which one is my favorite? The Atcha 96, the Atcha 86, and the Playa. These all fit my style, but if I only had one board, it would be the Atcha 96. As primarily a whitewater guy, this size and shape suits 90% of my needs.

My next dream paddling adventure is: Just got back from river running in Patagonia, so I think the next big trip is a paddle surf trip. a light and fast trip to surf Iceland, or maybe northern Ireland. who’s in?

What I do when I am not paddling: Climbing and skiing are my other passions. I’m a die hard boulderer at heart.

Why I love to SUP and how I discovered it: I love the solitude and the connection you make with the space around you on the water. I enjoy it all, whitewater paddling, downwinding and flat water. The ocean brought me into the SUP world in 2009 and I currently love exploring new rivers sections and multi day SUP touring spots.

The body of water you’ll most likely find me on: Blue River, CO

Which boards I’m riding? Which one is my favorite? …

Atcha 86 – for sporty whitewater and downriver surfing.

Radito – for burly, big water

Why I love SUP and how I discovered it…
I love SUP because it allows me to connect with the outdoors. To me, there is nothing like going with flow of the river on a SUP and experiencing the beauty that Mother Nature has to offer. I discovered SUP after whitewater kayaking for a few years. SUP was another challenging way to enjoy whitewater paddling. A couple of years ago an opportunity became available to manage a SUP shop in my hometown and I have been involved with standup paddling in some capacity ever since. Once I started paddling I was hooked on pushing the limits of SUP on challenging rapids and racing.

The body of water you’ll most likely find me on….
My favorite place to paddle is the Nolichucky Gorge. It is 20 minutes from my house and offers challenging class III/IV whitewater in a spectacular mountainous gorge.

Which boards I’m riding? Which one is my favorite?
I paddle the Atcha, Nass, and Daze the most. It’s hard to say which one is my favorite because they all perform so well. My favorite board depends on what conditions I choose to paddle in. I am stoked to paddle for a company like HALA Gear, who leads inflatable paddleboard technology and river paddleboard designs.

My next dream paddling adventure is…
I have always dreamed about paddling the Grand Canyon on a SUP. I have grown up experiencing the beautiful gorges of the Appalachian Mountains and I want to see what the Grand Canyon is all about.

What I do when I am not paddling?
I teach high school full-time and rep HALA Gear in the southeast region. When I am not paddling you can find me hiking, mountain biking, onewheeling, snowboarding, or looking for the next adventure with my love Maggie and our sidekick SUP dog Tomi.

Why I love to SUP and how I discovered it… It was on Town Lake in Austin, I knew it was going to be a big part of my life. I spent a couple years destroying boards before I found more river specific boards. I ran in to a very talented paddler named Barry at the local whitewater park,he showed me the next level and I have been in love every since

Which boards I’m riding? Which one is my favorite? I am ridding the Hala Atcha 9’6 predominantly so stable so responsive.

Why I love to SUP and how I discovered it…
I love to SUP because I love the SUP community, and my favorite place to be is on the water. I also love the diversity of the sport, with options from river running and surfing to touring, racing and yoga. I discovered SUP because a friend bought me a SUP lesson as a birthday present after I kept complaining that driving three hours to the ocean was too far to surf. Little did I know I would soon learn to surf on my local river 20 minutes from home.

The body of water you’ll most likely find me on…
DC’s jewel, the Potomac!

Which boards I’m riding? Which one is my favorite? …
I’m riding the Atcha for whitewater. The 9’6” for big water and the 8’6” for creeky runs. For whitewater racing and touring adventures, I go to the Nass 12’6”. The Atcha is an amazing all around board, so it’s my favorite currently. Not only does it stomp advanced whitewater, but it also surfs quite well. In addition, the stability of the Atcha makes it ideal for beginners and for yoga.

My next dream paddling adventure is…
To run the Upper Navua River canyon in Fiji, and then hang out on the coast and surf for a while.

What I do when I am not paddling?
I’m planning my next adventure, defending community interests in SW DC for water access and recreation, learning languages, jamming on my keyboard, snowboarding, onewheeling, or figuring out if living on a boat can be any cooler than it already is.

Why I love to SUP and how I discovered it…
As a white water raft guide, I am always looking for new and exciting ways to make my way down the river. When river paddle boarding started I saw an opportunity to take a new sport to it’s limits. While there are so many amazing decents being accomplished on boards these days, I still enjoy pushing my own skill and endurance level.

The body of water you’ll most likely find me on…
The Colorado River, and most likely the Shoshone section. Rarely do you find a section that runs the majority of the year, with back to back class III you can lap all day, and quite possibly the easiest shuttle ever. I estimate I’ve run this section nearly 1000 times in rafts, kayaks, duckies, and paddle boards and I still enjoy finding creative ways to make my way down this classic stretch of white water.

Which boards I’m riding? Which one is my favorite? …
Honestly, I wish I had a 10 board quiver of Hala awesomeness! However, if I had to narrow it down, I would take an Atcha (with the stomp box) for whitewater and all around fun, the Peno for river surfing, and I’m really excited about the new Team Rado for going fast in downriver as well as SUP cross races.

My next dream paddling adventure is…
Anywhere new. It could be in Colorado, another state, or another country. I love seeing new rivers and figuring out how to navigate them on a paddle board.

What I do when I am not paddling?
Train for paddling. As a member of the Mens US National Whitewater Raft team, training is basically year round. Theres always an event or race just a few short months away. Spending time in the gym keeping those key muscles ready to paddle is necessary to avoid injury and excel in whitewater. I also love to ski, bike, hike and pretty much any sport we can enjoy outdoors.

Maria Christina Schultz, is an outdoor enthusiast, ACA-certified stand up paddleboard instructor, artist, photographer, and dog trainer. Originally from Buffalo, New York, Maria is now based in central Virginia, where she lives with her husband and two Australian shepherds, Riley and Kona. In May of 2012, the first day Maria ever got on a stand up paddleboard Riley was with her – they learned the sport together and have been paddling as a team ever since. Wanting to share her love of paddling with dogs Maria combined her passions in graphic design, photography and paddling to publish two books: How to SUP With Your PUP, A Guide to Stand Up Paddleboarding With Your Dog, and Paddle Tails, Reflections on People and Dogs Who Find Balance on the Water. Maria also teaches SUP PUP classes in Central Virginia, and other cities along the East Coast. When she’s not out paddling with her dogs, Maria also enjoys whitewater SUP, mountain biking, hiking, climbing, skiing, and finding new ways to wear herself – and her dogs – out.

Why I love to SUP and how I discovered it…
In the summer of 2012 I needed a new outdoor hobby. It had to give me a good workout, and I wanted to have Riley along. Stand up paddleboarding! I loved the idea of being on the river, and that Riley might be into it as well (since I think he’s part fish). My suspicion was correct, Riley, and now Kona LOVE paddling with me, and I love this sport because it’s something we can all enjoy together.

Which boards I’m riding? Which one is my favorite? …
This season I’ll be riding the 12.6 Nass, the Straight Up, and the Milligram – as I work on my river surfing skills! My favorite board is the Straight Up – I love that it’s playful, and roomy when I want to bring both dogs along for a ride. The 10’ length gives us nice glide while the 32“ with is just the right balance between stability and efficency.

My next dream paddling adventure is…
70 miles down the Patuxent River, self support, with Kona on the nose of my 12.6 Nass!

I can enjoy an easy paddle along the lake bank or I can hit the whitewater and try to catch waves to surf. I grew up with parents owning a rafting company and began river guiding at a young age. When I discovered SUP, it energized every aspect of paddling for me and gave me a new way to share the river with other people.

Why I love to SUP and how I discovered it…
I’ve always loved being on and in the water. I’ve been whitewater kayaking for about 14 years. 8 years ago one of my friends convinced me to try paddle boarding for the first time during a race in Glenwood. During the race I swam every rapid and loved it. During that weekend I also got to try out river surfing and I was hooked. I needed a board. Ever since then I’ve been spending as much time as I can out on my board.

The body of water you’ll most likely find me on… In Whitewater or on a river wave. My home stretches are the Montrose Whitewater Park, Glenwood Wave, and Shoshone section of the Colorado River.

My next dream paddling adventure is…
There’s a multi day self support I have been trying to plan in British Columbia. I would also love to go back to Africa and try to surf the Nile in Uganda before it gets dammed. Maybe travel around and find more river waves to surf!

What I do when I am not paddling?

Why I love to SUP and how I discovered it…

I love any paddle sport and SUPping was an easy one to add. I discovered whitewater SUPping when I tried a river board left behind by an international paddler a few years back. Then about 2 years ago, I bought a whitewater board and started to run the local stretch.

The body of water you’ll most likely find me on…

I love surfing and paddling whitewater the most, but I enjoy paddling rivers through to surf!

Which boards I’m riding? Which one is my favorite? …

Currently, I am paddling a Hala Atcha. The board just makes whitewater easier. From the rocker to the narrow nose to allow for easy switching. Looking forward to getting my hands on a Hala Peño!

My next dream paddling adventure is…

South America is also good, but at the moment there is so much potential in Africa for whitewater SUPping that I am spoilt for choice. Madagascar is currently top of the Africa hit list.

Why I love to SUP and how I discovered it…

In the mid-2000s I worked into to owning one of the largest watersports guiding companies in the in Kailua, Hawaii. We guided kayaking, surfing, windsurfing, kitesurfing, snorkeling and virtually any watersports that came about. When the re-emergence of SUP began in Hawaii in the early 2000, we jumped on the chance and purchased a few. There were no training manuals out there, so I drafted the first ones and started taking trips out. On my personal time as an avid water lover, I started to take them out into the waves. I loved it and was hooked. From that point on, much of my water focus was on SUP on the ocean.

However, over a dozen years before that, I was a professional guide as a college job on the weekends. I initially started in rock climbing/mountaineering, and eventually transitioned over to whitewater rafting and kayaking on the famous Gauley and New Rivers (where to this day I still ”moonlight” guide and kayak). Oddly, despite being a river runner and Ocean SUP, I didn’t cross over onto rivers until 2016 when I started running class 3-4. While the majority of my days per year are on the ocean, I look forward to a few multi-days each year on the river. Really, just give me a board and a body of water and ill have fun.

The body of water you’ll most likely find me on…

I have an addiction to all forms of water. Waves are where I usually go, rivers are where my roots are, but the frozen stuff is also great, I love being in the mountains too. Most of my days are spent in the waves of Oahu, Hawaii.

Which boards I’m riding? Which one is my favorite? …

My go to is the Hala Nass 12’6 . Its perfect for a single board in a quiver and can easily manage small surf, snorkeling, taking out friends and kids, travel expeditions, rivers and also great for beginners. Its great for cruiser days too.

My next dream paddling adventure is…

I always look forward to the Middle Fork of the Salmon but have a few remote multi day downwinders planned in Hawaii for 2018.

I am a serial entrepreneur and guide globally. Currently I am the Co-Founder/Brewmaster at Lanikai Brewing Company where we create Island Inspired® authentic Hawaiian Craft Beer on the day to day, Founder of Strategic Consulting where I advise new and existing business in a variety of disciplines like renewable energy, manufacturing, design, etc, and finally also get about 60 days/year guiding a mix of mountains, rivers, and oceans. My wife and I get outside and hit the beach whenever we can!

Why I love to SUP and how I discovered it:
I was a prone paddler for 10+ years when I was an open water lifeguard. For my 30th birthday (March 2014) I decided I wanted to take my yoga instructing to the next level. I signed up for a SUP Yoga Teacher Training with Bliss Paddle Yoga in Laguna Beach, CA. Before I attended the training I wanted to actually try SUP, so I went to the 2014 Outdoor Adventure Expo in Seattle and met Jeff Underwood from Kirkland (NW Paddle Surfer’s) and Corey Dolan from Tacoma (Dolan’s Board Sports). There was a demo pool set up to where I was able to paddle and try yoga on their boards for hours. Corey invited me back the next day to be his “SUP Yoga demo girl”. At the conclusion of the event, Jeff and Corey offered my a position teaching SUP yoga for their rental business in the 2014 Summer season. I was stoked to already have 2 places to teach SUP Yoga that summer.
I completed my training in CA and simply fell in love with SUP. Corey encouraged and motivated me to start racing and in April 2014 I did my first race and won! I was hooked and started paddling/ training everyday on a King’s board and with Kialoa paddle Corey provided to me.
Once the warm weather came, I started teaching outdoors in Kirkland and Tacoma, for Jeff & Corey May through September 2014, then moved to teaching SUP Yoga at indoor pools for the fall and winter. I was certified by Corey in PaddleFit level 1 & 2 October 2014, which really helped me to dial in my paddling technique for racing and become a better instructor.
The 2015 and 2016 season was even more successful. I taught SUP Yoga, PaddleFit lessons, and attended as many races as I could in WA, Idaho, Canada, and Oregon. I have been working hard on expanding my own business, Paddling Yogini. I now have a fleet of boards for my rentals, lessons, and retreats. I am stoked for summer 2018 season!

The body of water you’ll most likely find me on…
Lake Sammamish & Washington, Beaver & Pine Lake, Puget Sound, and the Snoqualmie river.

Which boards I’m riding? Which one is my favorite?
I love the New Asana! Perfect for my PaddleFlow practice! Looking forward to family fun on the Hala Daze this summer, too!

My next dream paddling adventure is:
Back to Hawaii for surf, SUP, sand, & sunshine. I was lucky enough to go to Oahu and Big Island for the first time last year and I’m looking forward to more trips to Hawaii!

What I do when I am not paddling?
I teach! I teach Vinyasa Flow Yoga; I have a passion for challenging my students and helping them to take their practice to the next level. I am a certified SUP (Stand Up Paddleboard) Yoga instructor through Yoga Alliance™, a PaddleFit Core Coach through PaddleFit, a Gold PiYo™ (Pilates/yoga blend) Instructor through BeachBody™, and a TRX™ (suspension training) Instructor through Fitness Anywhere™. I have been a certified American Red Cross Lifeguard and Swim Instructor for over 16 years.

I mother! I have 2 little yogis of my own! I have a 13 year old daughter who is an artist, writer, yogini, & in Martial Arts. I have an 8 year old son, who loves yoga, swimming, SUP & Martial Arts. They are my life and my motivation to excel in life!

Why I love to SUP and how I discovered it…

I found SUP on my first river trip, when I hopped on to “try” one and pretty much wouldn’t give it back to its rightful owner for the rest of the trip. It felt a bit like skiing—linear, fast, cold, and exhilarating. SUP is so liberating—you can check out side channels, pull over at tiny beaches, go take a closer look at that crazy rock—without any issues. Also, the truth about me is, I love being fit, but I hate going to the gym. Paddleboarding gets me working out, which I need to do to all summer stay conditioned for my winter job.

The body of water you’ll most likely find me on…

You’re most likely to find me on the Roaring Fork River or the Colorado River.

Which boards I’m riding? Which one is my favorite?…

I ride a lot of Hala boards! The Playa, the Atcha 86, the Atcha, the Straight Up, and the Peno.

My next dream paddling adventure is…

My dream paddling adventure? Takes place on a beautiful and unthreatened river. Beautiful weather abounds, and there are no forgotten items, no fire bans, no injuries, no bad swims, no worries.

What I do when I am not paddling?

When I am not paddling I am ski patrolling at Aspen Snowmass.

I discovered SUP while searching for a lightweight vessel to make a 100 mile trip down a local river. That expedition sparked an obession with self supported SUP trips in remote areas as well as the allure of doing something no one else has ever done. Since then I have a few notable first descents under my belt including:

– First SUP descent of the Guadalupe River to the Gulf of Mexico (110 miles)

#TX100MileStand threw us a curve ball on the first night when it flash flooded and rose 25ft almost taking out our camp while we slept in our hammocks. We also had to fight through thousands of yards of unpassable log jams, swarms of mosquitos and 30mph cross winds while crossing the bay.

-First SUP descent of the Rio Grande through Big Bend NP (100 miles)
This trip was the opposite of our first when we found ourselves in the middle of a 9 year long drought and found no water in the river. Between dragging our fully loaded boards over boulders for approx 20 miles of the 100, braving the 100° days and 30° nights we soldiered on to complete our goal after 7 days on the water.

-#StandOnTheRioGrande was also nominated for Expedition of the year at the SUP Awards.

-Self-supported down 150 miles through the remote jungles of Nicaragua to document the river for the first time as well as to find the needs of the indigenous Miskito people of the area.

You can most likely find me paddling anywhere on the 250 miles stretch of the Guadalupe River through Texas at anytime of the year

Which boards I’m riding? Which one is my favorite? … I ride the Hoss, Straight up and Nass. I Prefer the Hoss because of its stability and the variety of disciplines you can use it for, be it Expeditions, Fishing (spear or rod and reel) whitewater or just a day on the water with the family.

What I do when I am not paddling? When not paddling, you can usually find me on a rock face somewhere in the world sport climbing or even big wall. The rest of the time I love to Backpack, Travel, Kiteboard, Spear fish, Scuba dive or Surf all throughout Nicaragua, Mexico or the US

Why I love to SUP and how I discovered it… my boss had some SUP-boards lying around. We don’t have a lake close by, so i thought it might work on the river in front of the raft base too. After spending some time on the world wide web, to find some tutorials which wasn’t a great success at that time, i just grab a board, paddle, went down to the river and went swimming a lot with all my gear.

I love whitewater SUP because every single day is different on the river. Some waves are bigger or smaller, the eddy’s are changing, more or less current….. there is allways another spirit and challange…. and also very important for me is to be apart of something new and get together with people, sharing the same passion. In the end it is about having a great time with great people on the river!

The body of water you’ll most likely find me on… Most of the time you’ll find me on or at river Saalach in Austria – which runs through my hometown.

Which boards I’m riding? Which one is my favorite? … I’m hooked to the Atcha 86!!!! It’s the perfect board for our rivers back here in the Alps, which are more technical than high volume…..

My next dream paddling adventure is… I got a multi day trip in mind, which i’m planning. So stay tuned for more

What I do when I am not paddling? Earning my money as a full time raft guide and spending time with my sled dog called “Nanook” and being outdoors in any kind of way.

Why I love to SUP and how I discovered it… I was first brought into the world of SUP while on a river trip down the second half of the Grand Canyon. My Good friend had an extra board on the trip and asked if I would like to paddle the rapids with him. I figured what the heck, if he is offering how bad can it be. After being thrashed by every single one of North Americas’ biggest rapids I was hooked. I loved the challenge of reading the rapids and adjusting to attempt to make it through on my feet. That didn’t happen much, but on the rare occasions it did the feeling was like nothing I had felt before. Now a year and a half into my paddling career I love being able to push the boundaries of my abilities and hopefully the boundaries of the sport.

The body of water you’ll most likely find me on… I am a river rat. I love paddling whitewater and doing overnight trips.

Which boards I’m riding? Which one is my favorite? … My go to board is the Atcha 9’6”. It is an incredible board for whitewater running and very responsive in technical races. For long distance/speed, I will be on the Radito. Of these two boards the Atcha is my favorite. It is so versatile, I can tackle any water from class II-IV to lakes if need be.

My next dream paddling adventure is… PALAU!!!!! I want to do a multi day paddling trip in the Rock Islands of Palau which will consists of navigating an archipelago of around 300 islands, WW2 relics and some incredible snorkeling. More info to come upon completion of this expedition.

What I do when I am not paddling? All things outdoors. Rock climb, mountainbike, slack line, waterski, snowboard, kiteboard, surf, fish, van life, backpack, canyoneering, acro yoga.

Why I love to SUP and how I discovered it… The thrill of it

The body of water you’ll most likely find me on… Currently traveling, so you will find me on most any body of water. Whether it is a lake, river or ocean.

Which boards I’m riding? Which one is my favorite? … I am riding the Playa and Straight Up.  As for choosing my favorite board, I would say it all depends on activity and body of water. For rivers – I love the Atcha 86 because it is small, nibble, easily maneuverable and a playful board. And the Atcha 96 when I am doing bigger whitewater for that extra stability. For lakes – I love going fast and gaining speed, the Nass-T is my go to board. Quick like a bullet and with the carbon reinforcement you get the properties of a hardboard but can still roll it in a backpack And for ocean – This one is tough, for long cruising waves I love the Playa. You can catch waves from far out and ride it all the way to shore. For playful waves and maneuvers i love the Gram.  So many choices, which ones will you choose…

My next dream paddling adventure is… The canals and rivers of Thailand and Vietnam. Expedition tours for days while living off the land and what is available in the water.

What I do when I am not paddling? You can find me outside. Either mountain biking, skiing or exploring the other side of the world.
