Why I love to SUP and how I discovered it… I started out when I went to work for Bent River Outfitter last summer and fell in love with the sport. Now I can not go to bed without dreaming about it. Nothing better than it being you, your board and the water and beautiful nature around you!

The body of water you’ll most likely find me on

The Cobb River, Blue Earth River, Minnesota River, Mississippi River.

Which boards I’m riding? Which one is my favorite?

Well right now I do not have a favorite there is something to like about all the boards. If I am on one normally going longer distances with the Nass.

My next dream paddling adventure is…

My next dream paddling adventure is getting ready to set up a trip on the Mississippi from top to bottom and hopefully do it the fastest it ever been done.

What I do when I am not paddling? If I am not paddling you can find me out skiing, skate skiing, classic xc, rock climbing, backcountry skiing, hockey, running, swimming, kayaking, camping and planning new trips.

I was introduced to Stand-up Paddleboarding on the crisp, blue waters of Lake Tahoe. I was captivated from the very first paddle stroke. The feeling of standing and gliding over water, while being able to see through it, was just magical. When I later discovered whitewater SUPing, it literally changed my life. The added challenge of negotiating the river environment while trying to stand through rapids has become my greatest obsession.

The body of water you’ll most likely find me on is a river near you.

I have tried many boards on the Hala fleet. I’m the proud owner of a Hala Nass and a Hala Atcha. I prefer the Nass for flatwater paddling and racing, and the Atcha for riding rivers, tackling whitewater, and surfing river waves.

My next dream paddling adventure is to travel across Western States with my wife, while sampling local whitewater, meeting other SUPers and sharing the stoke for standing on rivers.

When I’m not paddling I’m either working to fund my next paddling adventure, or I’m planning my next paddling adventure.

Why I love to SUP and how I discovered it? I love SUP because it’s fun fitness. It cures my craving for surfing. It satisfies my creative spirit. I went to a SUP yoga class in Cleveland, OH. I had the time of my life, and decided right away that SUP fitness was my thing. I trained with Gillian Gibree’s, at her Paddle into Fitness school in San Diego. It was a life changing experience. Since I’ve moved to Albuquerque, NM where I train clients indoors on my Hala Atcha, we have such a fun time. I’m changing lives.

The body of water you’ll most likely find me on: An indoor pool is where you’ll find me. In the summer you’ll find me at Cochiti Lake, in Sandoval County, NM. It’s a perfect lake to take groups out for SUP’ing and yoga on the SUP.

Which boards I’m riding? The Hala Atcha. Which one is my favorite? I don’t have a favorite. I’m still learning.

My next dream paddling adventure is to compete on White Water.

What I do when I am not paddling? Sleeping.

Why I love to SUP and how I discovered it:

I love SUP because I’m at my best surrounded by nature, on the water, and being active.   Paddling really became a lifestyle for me because of how versitle the adventures can be.  Whether it’s an intense workout against a current, a fun group activity out with friends, or just a “zen“ moment in nature, the paddler can make it what they want it to be.

I discovered SUP from Nashville Paddle Co. Owner (and dear friend) Margaret Littman.  When we both found ourselves transplated from Chicago to Nashville, she told me I had to try this SUP thing she’d discovered while writing an article on paddle boards.  She had a feeling I would fall in love with it as fast as she did, and she was dead on.  This “new“ sport was the perfect remedy for us yankees to stay active while survivng the hot Tennessee summers.   We liked it so much, we decided Nashville needed a paddle company so other Southerners could get a taste. Five years later, and I’m teaching hundreds of people each season how anyone can safely enjoy some SUP time on the water in Music City.

The body of water you’ll most likely find me on… is Percy Priest Lake, or the Cumberland River.

Which boards I’m riding? Which one is my favorite? … Hala Playa and Hala Straight Up are my two faves from 2016.  I love the Playa solo, but appreciate the sturdiness of the Straight Up with my 65-pound dog, LeRoy.  I’m looking forward to finding my new favorites from the 2017 line as soon as our weather permits.

My next dream paddling adventure is… Glacier National Park, hands down.  I can’t even look at photos of those gorgeous lakes without imagining the views from a board.  I have a feeling that trip is eventually going to make it to the very top of my list (of favorite paddles ever) which includes Orcas Island, Barcelona, and Chile.

What I do when I am not paddling? I’m a musician, so I’m either writing songs, recording vocals, or on stage rockin’ out.   Catch my new album “Howla” due out in February, on iTunes or at jackydustin.com.

Why I love to SUP and how I discovered it…

I love to SUP, especially whitewater SUP, because I love the feeling of walking on moving water and communing with nature.  I discovered flatwater SUP when a friend who lives in Tahoe encouraged my husband and me to try paddling on the Lake.  Fifteen minutes after standing up, we were already thinking about buying one! A few years later we explored some rivers in the California Redwoods, and we’ve been hooked on river SUP ever since.

The body of water you’ll most likely find me on…

You’ll most likely find me on Lake Tahoe, on the Truckee River, or on the South Fork of the American River.

Which boards I’m riding? Which one is my favorite? …

I’m riding the Atcha 8‘6 and the Playa.  I love both, of course, but my favorite is my Atcha because it peforms so well on rivers.

My next dream paddling adventure is…

My next dream paddling adventures will hopefully be exploring the rivers and coastline of Costa Rica or Patagonia, and an overnight river SUP trip somewhere in Oregon or Idaho.

Why I love to SUP and how I discovered it: I was looking for a new way to explore and enhance myself and my Minnesota State Park Project. Minnesota is filled with countless lakes, river, and creeks. I originally considered a few different avenues and kept coming back to an inflatable paddle board. I wanted something I could easily travel with at all times and access some remote area. Never being on a paddle board I ordered my Hala Nass, hit the water, and instantly fell in love. Nala, name I christened my board, sparked a new passion I didn’t know existed. I love finding new way to push my skills and ability on my SUP, which in turns progresses me forward in all aspects of my life. I am a SUP lifer for sure!

The body of water you’ll most likely find me on: If there is water I want to be on/in it. However, living in Minnesota you will see me out paddling lakes, rivers, creeks, ponds, and really anything I can find. I love to paddle with sunsets! Heck you might even spot me wake surfing Nala behind my buddie’s boat.

Which boards I’m riding? Which one is my favorite? I am currently riding Nala aka my Hala Nass 12 footer. We have tons of miles under our belt already and plenty more adventures to come. I do however, want to try out as many other boards as I can to have a true knowledge of the entire Hala lineup.

My next dream paddling adventure is: Hard to answer since I am in the early planning stages already. I don’t know if I want to give it away yet. I can say glaciers, icebergs, and midnight sun will be involved.

What I do when I am not paddling? I’m a mountain biker, photographer, hiker, camper, downhill skier, skateboarder, rock climber, Jeeper, kettlebeller, and really any extreme sport. I dabble in all sorts of activities that push my physical and mental “limits”. I also love movies, traveling, and assisting others with discovering the great outdoors and/or a new passion in life.

I’ve been paddling as long as I can remember (canoeing, sea kayaking, whitewater kayaking) but finally got Into SUP after years of whitewater kayaking just stopped feeling intuitive and needed a way to still get on the river. I love SUP because it allows me to feel apart of the water and my surroundings.

I ride the Hala Nass when I’m on Flatwater and I ride the Atcha 86 on the river.  If I had to choose one it’s the Nass because it’s the all purpose adventuring and touring model that can get me in deep wilderness locations.

My next dream paddling adventure is…

1) The opening of the Fort Collins Whitewater Park in 2018

2) Paddling the Border Route of the Boundary Water Canoe Area unsupported

3) Taking a group of eager students to the Big Island of Hawaii to study Biomimicry and learn to SUP in the ocean

What I do when I am not paddling?

When not paddling I teach science to young minds and leading students in adventure at Polaris Expeditionary Learning School in Fort Collins.  In addition to sharing knowledge adventures with students, I spend time finding new ways of adventuring and paddleboarding with her 4 year old and husband. When not skiing a line on Cameron Pass, trail running, or mountain biking, I tends to her 2 acre farm and bees in Northwest Fort Collins.

Why I love to SUP and how I discovered it…

Paddleboarding through whitewater was something that often tempted me as the seasons changed and the ice-falls melted. Living in the greater Yellowstone ecosystem presents one with a tremendous amount of outdoor opportunity and to really excel in your sports you have to be a little selective about where you dedicate you time. Ice climbing was my cold sport, rock climbing my warm, but I didnt have my wet sport decided on. I started launching after the Yellowstone, Gallatin, and Madison river with the determination of making it an integral facet of my outside adventures.

The body of water you’ll most likely find me on…

Something dynamic, white, and freshly melted from the mountains. The Rocky’s have a multitude of small rivers rushing from them, which, in many circumstances, are more apt for paddleboards or Kayaks because of size yet hold a plethora of IV’s and V’s. I‘ll either be out there trying to pioneer my way down some of those or out on the Gallatin.

Which boards I’m riding? Which one is my favorite? …

I ride the Hala Luya with a butterknife. I have riden the Atcha, which I still have yet to get, its a great board and my buddy lets me steal his depending on the water I‘m heading out to so long as I leave my Luya in its place.

My next dream paddling adventure is…

The Tuolumne River in California

What I do when I am not paddling?

Ice Climb, Rock Climb, spend every waking moment outside adventuring with my son, plan big goals and work hard only to laugh at my shortcomings.

Why I love to SUP and how I discovered it…

I am a total beginner! I just started playing around a couple years ago, renting boards here and there and playing on our local lakes, and when traveling to Baja playing in the ocean.  I have a long haired dachshund named Karl that is obsessed with paddle boarding.  I live right down the street from Vallecito Lake, so in the evenings after work, you will often find Karl and I paddling around the lake.

The body of water you’ll most likely find me on…

Vallecito Lake, Lemon Lake, The Animas River (only in the chill parts), or down in Baja. I have found that I like open water, the waves are still a little intimidating to me.

Which boards I’m riding? Which one is my favorite? …

I have tried a variety of boards from Hala (Carbon Playa, Rival Hoss, Hala Atcha, and Nass). My favorite is the Hala Nass 12.6, it’s so versatile. I can go for short or long paddles with it and there is plenty of space if I want to have a friend ride with me (and of course Karl).

My next dream paddling adventure is…

This is a hard question for me because I feel like anytime I am on my board I am having a dream adventure. I think an overnight would be fun. I do have a trip planned this fall that involves some fun paddling in Australia!

What I do when I am not paddling?

I work for a wilderness therapy program in Durango, CO and although we don’t offer water recreation to our clients I believe in the healing power of nature.  When I am working with families I am able to speak to my experience in nature and what it has done for me…for example paddling around the local lakes helps calm my mind and reset myself on a daily basis.

I love traveling and have been to some incredible places. I also enjoy spending time with my friends and family, creating yummy food, wandering the endless trails in my area, practicing yoga, reading a good book (usually sci-fi or fantasy), jeeping around the desert, and doing therapy dog work with Karl.

Why I love to SUP and how I discovered it…

One day, April, a friend of mine had to travel to Poland to see family and she left her SUP board with me for storage. I had never been on one before, so one day I decided to take it on the Rogue River just to see what the ”SUP fuss” was all about. I came back home with bruised shins, bruised knees and a bruised ego, I tipped out even on class one rapids. I had to go back again to redeem myself, and again, and again…until I got really good at whitewater SUPing. Why do I love it so much..? Well, if you know what you are doing, you can take it pretty much anywhere, even on lakes.

The body of water you’ll most likely find me on…

Once in a while I’d take my SUP on a lake, especially for endurance training. However, I’m more into whitewater paddling, I feel like there’s still much more to learn and discover. Class I – III, I’d mos def do it. Class IV – V, I’m a little selective. I prefer high volume river when it comes to Class IV – V, I’d totally do a Class V rapid on the Mighty Zambezi, than a technical, rocky class IV river.

Which boards I’m riding? Which one is my favorite? …

I recently moved from NRS to Hala, (personal preference) I have ridden a lot of non-Hala boards, and a couple of Hala ones, and to me the Hala Atcha is the best. For me the Atcha is the most All-rounder. It performs really well on big rapids, it plays really well and it has enough room to carry gear.

My next dream paddling adventure is…

Well, since I’m still new at this, for me SUPing the Mighty Zambezi will be a dream. I have rafted that river for more than 10 years straight, but haven’t had the chance to SUP it. I have always wanted to run the Futa, SUPing it will be awesome too. And of course I’m curious about Patagonia…

What I do when I am not paddling?

I am currently at school. Chemical Engineering at Oregon State. So, yep, that’s what takes most of my time. Otherwise, I do art, I draw, paint and make crafts. I do rock-climbing, mostly indoors. And I practice martial arts, not for sport, just to tame my inner beast.

Why I love to SUP and how I discovered it…

I grew up floating the river on tubes and rafts, and jumping off bridges and cliffs with my friends.  I love any excuse to get in the water.  After trying a friend’s board on a lake, I bought my first inflatable SUP and quickly realized it was a lot more cruising a river on a SUP than it is sitting on a raft.  After moving to a whitewater town, I got a fatter board and just went for it.  Whitewater SUP is now my favorite activity.  I even go in the middle of the winter if the river comes up.  There’s something about feeling the power of the water under my feet and on my paddle that makes me feel more connected to the earth than when I’m actually connected to the earth.  The challenge of standing through big rapids or surfing a wave keeps things interesting, and the occasional swim through rapids makes me feel young.

The body of water you’ll most likely find me on…

The Wenatchee River is amazing for whitewater SUP.  It’s pretty wide and deep, so there are a lot of good rapids with relatively low consequences if you swim.  There are also plenty of surf waves to be found.

Which boards I’m riding? Which one is my favorite? …

After spending a couple years on river using boards that were too flat to surf, and surf boards that were too small to run rapids, I finally discovered the Hala Atcha 86.  I love it for surfing and it does really well going down river through the rapids.  I also have the Atcha 96 for really big water and the Rado for family trips and taking first timers through the rapids.

My next dream paddling adventure is…

I really want to get into multi-day river trips.

What I do when I am not paddling?

When I’m not paddling, it’s usually because I fell off in the rapids. I just climb back on, and start paddling again.  I also do normal family stuff like watch my kids play soccer, and well as normal adult stuff like go to work as a high school art teacher.

Why I love to SUP and how I discovered it…

I discovered paddle boarding when I lived in San Diego with my brother. He introduced me to the surfing world. I fell in love with surfing immediately. Paddle boarding is an extension of surfing.

The body of water you’ll most likely find me on…

I can be found mostly on the great lakes during the summer. I like to paddle the ocean and freshwater springs in Florida.

Which boards I’m riding? Which one is my favorite? …

Hala Nass and Straight UP. No favorites love them equally. I want all the hala boards. For longer expeditions I prefer the Nass for speed and carrying gear. For fun on waves and rivers I prefer the straight up. It has quicker turning response and a little wider for stability. The carbon stringer on the straight up makes it feel like a hard board. Its a really nice addition to ISUPs

My next dream paddling adventure is…

Dream paddle adventure would be to ride in some extreme terrain with a group of friends and experienced paddlers. SUP a group of rapids or around a group of islands. Have a multiday trek on a foreign body of water with all expenses paid with your closest friends.

What I do when I am not paddling?

I am a nurse been practicing for about 9 years. If not providing healthcare services. I am hiking and or mountain biking with family and friends.

Why I love to SUP and how I discovered it…

I love to SUP because it brings me into a state of harmony, happiness and balance.  When I’m standup paddleboarding I’m vibrantly alive and present with my body, my mind, the water, the sky, with all life.  I love the versatility of the sport – from practicing SUP Yoga, to prone paddling, surfing, fitness or flatwater cruising, paddleboarding brings everything I’m passionate about together on any available body of water.  Technically, standup paddling is everything that I love about surfing.  It’s both physically challenging and mentally calming.  The moment my feet touch the board, a smile comes to my face and I feel free.  There are few experiences more enjoyable.

Raised on the sunny coast of California, I have great memories of long summer days spent in and beside the ocean as a child.  But my real love affair with water began the instant I stood up on a surfboard and rode a wave for the first time.  Decades later, after relocating to inland NC, my passion for surfing led me to explore the world of paddleboarding.  My father, a skilled waterman and lifelong surfer, introduced me to the sport in 2010 and I was hooked!  North Carolina’s access to beautiful lakes, rivers, the ocean, and mild weather year round made it the perfect setting for learning and falling in love with SUP. In the spring of 2013, I turned my love of paddleboarding into a career and became a certified SUP coach. I founded LYFSUP, a year ’round SUP and SUP yoga school dedicated to sharing the stoke, adventure, and benefits of the sport with others!

The body of water you’ll most likely find me on…

Beautiful Jordan Lake State Park, NC or the Pacific Ocean in my native Santa Cruz, California.

Which boards I’m riding? Which one is my favorite? …

I’m smitten with just about every board HALA makes.  But if I had to choose a favorite, it’d be the Carbon Straight Up.

My next dream paddling adventure is…
