Why I love to SUP and how I discovered it… I was introduced to Stand-up Paddleboarding on the crisp, blue waters of Lake Tahoe. I was captivated from the very first paddle stroke. The feeling of standing and gliding over water, while being able to see through it, was just magical. When I later discovered whitewater SUPing, it literally changed my life. The added challenge of negotiating the river environment while trying to stand through rapids has become my greatest obsession.

The body of water you’ll most likely find me on… The body of water you’ll most likely find me on is a river near you.

Which boards I’m riding?… I’m currently riding the Carbon 12’ 6” Nass on flatwater and the 9’ 6” Atcha in whitewater. Because I’m biased to SUPing on rivers the Atcha is my favorite board.

Next dream paddling adventure… It’s difficult to nail down my next dream paddling adventure, as I am always scheming something up. Second on the list to returning to the Soča River in Slovenia (Summer 2018), is exploring the whitewater scene in Mexico and/or Chile.

What do I do when I’m not paddling? When I’m not paddling I’m either working to fund my next paddling adventure, or I’m planning my next paddling adventure.

Why I love to SUP and how I discovered it? I love SUP because it’s fun fitness. It cures my craving for surfing. It satisfies my creative spirit. I went to a SUP yoga class in Cleveland, OH. I had the time of my life, and decided right away that SUP fitness was my thing. I trained with Gillian Gibree’s, at her Paddle into Fitness school in San Diego. It was a life changing experience. Since I’ve moved to Albuquerque, NM where I train clients indoors on my Hala Atcha, we have such a fun time. I’m changing lives.

The body of water you’ll most likely find me on: An indoor pool is where you’ll find me. In the summer you’ll find me at Cochiti Lake, in Sandoval County, NM. It’s a perfect lake to take groups out for SUP’ing and yoga on the SUP.

Which boards I’m riding? The Hala Atcha. Which one is my favorite? I don’t have a favorite. I’m still learning.

My next dream paddling adventure is to compete on White Water.

What I do when I am not paddling? Sleeping.

Why I love to SUP and how I discovered it… I love SUP because I’m at my best surrounded by nature, on the water, and being active.   Paddling really became a lifestyle for me because of how versatile the adventures can be.  Whether it’s an intense workout against a current, a fun group activity out with friends, or just a “zen“ moment in nature, the paddler can make it what they want it to be.

I discovered SUP from Nashville Paddle Co. owner (and dear friend) Margaret Littman.  When we both found ourselves transplanted from Chicago to Nashville, she told me I had to try this SUP thing she’d discovered while writing an article on paddle boards.  She had a feeling I would fall in love with it as fast as she did, and she was dead on.  This “new“ sport was the perfect remedy for us yankees to stay active while surviving the hot Tennessee summers.   We liked it so much, we decided Nashville needed a paddle company so other Southerners could get a taste. Six years later, and I’m teaching hundreds of people each season how anyone can safely enjoy some SUP time on the water in Music City.

The body of water you’ll most likely find us on… Percy Priest Lake or the Cumberland River with NPC.  However, each year I make it a point to travel with my inflatable on an awesome paddle adventure.  Favorite trips thus far include Orcas Island, Barcelona, Patagonia, and Dubai.

Which boards I’m riding?… I’m currently riding the Carbon Straight Up, and absolutely loving it.  My dog loves its stability, and I’m hoping my baby will too, as soon as she’s able to SUP.

Next dream paddling adventure… My next dream paddling adventure is Glacier National Park, hands down.  I can’t even look at photos of those gorgeous lakes without imagining the views from a board.

What do I do when I’m not paddling? I’m a musician and a new mom, so when I’m not paddling I’m either taking care of my little girl Happy, or writing songs, recording vocals, and rocking out on stage.   Listen to my latest album “Howla” on iTunes/Spotify or at jackydustin.com.

Why I love to SUP and how I discovered it… I love paddle boarding, especially whitewater SUP, because I love the feeling of walking on moving water, and challenging myself physically as well as mentally.  I discovered flat water paddle boarding when a friend who lives nearby at Lake Tahoe encouraged my husband and me to try paddle boarding on the lake.  Fifteen minutes after standing up, we were hooked and already thinking about buying boards! A few years later we explored some easy rivers in Utah and the California Redwoods, and we’ve been addicted to river paddle boarding ever since.

The body of water you’ll most likely find me on…You’ll most likely find me on Lake Tahoe, on the Truckee River in Nevada and California, on the American River in California, and on the Deschutes River in Oregon.

Which boards I’m riding? Which one is my favorite? … I’m riding the Atcha 8‘6“, the Atcha 9‘6“, and the Playa.  I love all of them, of course, but my favorite is the Atcha 8‘6“ because it’s light-weight for carrying, good for river surfing, and easy to maneuver through rapids.

My next dream paddling adventure will soon become a reality in the summer of 2018 when I join my husband, Davide Sartoni, as we paddle on the Soca River in Slovenia.

2) Paddling the Border Route of the Boundary Water Canoe Area unsupported
3) Taking a group of eager students to the Big Island of Hawaii to study Biomimicry and learn to SUP in the ocean

Why I love to SUP and how I discovered it… I just started playing around a couple years ago, renting boards here and there and playing on our local lakes, and when traveling to Baja playing in the ocean.  I have a long haired dachshund named Karl that is obsessed with paddle boarding.  I live right down the street from Vallecito Lake, so in the evenings after work, you will often find Karl and I paddling around the lake.

The body of water you’ll most likely find me on… Vallecito Lake, Lemon Lake, The Animas River (only in the chill parts), or down in Baja. I have found that I like open water, the waves are still a little intimidating to me.

Which boards I’m riding? Which one is my favorite? … I have tried a variety of boards from Hala (Carbon Playa, Rival Hoss, Hala Atcha, and Nass). My favorite is the Hala Nass 12.6, it’s so versatile. I can go for short or long paddles with it and there is plenty of space if I want to have a friend ride with me (and of course Karl).

My next dream paddling adventure is… This is a hard question for me because I feel like anytime I am on my board I am having a dream adventure. I think an overnight would be fun. I do have a trip planned this fall that involves some fun paddling in Australia!

What I do when I am not paddling? I work for a wilderness therapy program in Durango, CO and although we don’t offer water recreation to our clients I believe in the healing power of nature.  When I am working with families I am able to speak to my experience in nature and what it has done for me…for example paddling around the local lakes helps calm my mind and reset myself on a daily basis.

I love traveling and have been to some incredible places. I also enjoy spending time with my friends and family, creating yummy food, wandering the endless trails in my area, practicing yoga, reading a good book (usually sci-fi or fantasy), jeeping around the desert, and doing therapy dog work with Karl.

Why I love to SUP and how I discovered it…

One day, April, a friend of mine had to travel to Poland to see family and she left her SUP board with me for storage. I had never been on one before, so one day I decided to take it on the Rogue River just to see what the ”SUP fuss” was all about. I came back home with bruised shins, bruised knees and a bruised ego, I tipped out even on class one rapids. I had to go back again to redeem myself, and again, and again…until I got really good at whitewater SUPing. Why do I love it so much..? Well, if you know what you are doing, you can take it pretty much anywhere, even on lakes.

The body of water you’ll most likely find me on…

Once in a while I’d take my SUP on a lake, especially for endurance training. However, I’m more into whitewater paddling, I feel like there’s still much more to learn and discover. Class I – III, I’d mos def do it. Class IV – V, I’m a little selective. I prefer high volume river when it comes to Class IV – V, I’d totally do a Class V rapid on the Mighty Zambezi, than a technical, rocky class IV river.

Which boards I’m riding? Which one is my favorite? …

I recently moved from NRS to Hala, (personal preference) I have ridden a lot of non-Hala boards, and a couple of Hala ones, and to me the Hala Atcha is the best. For me the Atcha is the most All-rounder. It performs really well on big rapids, it plays really well and it has enough room to carry gear.

My next dream paddling adventure is…

Well, since I’m still new at this, for me SUPing the Mighty Zambezi will be a dream. I have rafted that river for more than 10 years straight, but haven’t had the chance to SUP it. I have always wanted to run the Futa, SUPing it will be awesome too. And of course I’m curious about Patagonia…

What I do when I am not paddling?

I am currently at school. Chemical Engineering at Oregon State. So, yep, that’s what takes most of my time. Otherwise, I do art, I draw, paint and make crafts. I do rock-climbing, mostly indoors. And I practice martial arts, not for sport, just to tame my inner beast.

Why I love to SUP and how I discovered it…

I grew up floating the river on tubes and rafts, and jumping off bridges and cliffs with my friends.  I love any excuse to get in the water.  After trying a friend’s board on a lake, I bought my first inflatable SUP and quickly realized it was a lot more cruising a river on a SUP than it is sitting on a raft.  After moving to a whitewater town, I got a fatter board and just went for it.  Whitewater SUP is now my favorite activity.  I even go in the middle of the winter if the river comes up.  There’s something about feeling the power of the water under my feet and on my paddle that makes me feel more connected to the earth than when I’m actually connected to the earth.  The challenge of standing through big rapids or surfing a wave keeps things interesting, and the occasional swim through rapids makes me feel young.

The body of water you’ll most likely find me on…

The Wenatchee River is amazing for whitewater SUP.  It’s pretty wide and deep, so there are a lot of good rapids with relatively low consequences if you swim.  There are also plenty of surf waves to be found.

Which boards I’m riding? Which one is my favorite? …

After spending a couple years on river using boards that were too flat to surf, and surf boards that were too small to run rapids, I finally discovered the Hala Atcha 86.  I love it for surfing and it does really well going down river through the rapids.  I also have the Atcha 96 for really big water and the Rado for family trips and taking first timers through the rapids.

My next dream paddling adventure is…

I really want to get into multi-day river trips.

What I do when I am not paddling?

When I’m not paddling, it’s usually because I fell off in the rapids. I just climb back on, and start paddling again.  I also do normal family stuff like watch my kids play soccer, and well as normal adult stuff like go to work as a high school art teacher.

Why I love to SUP and how I discovered it…

I discovered paddle boarding when I lived in San Diego with my brother. He introduced me to the surfing world. I fell in love with surfing immediately. Paddle boarding is an extension of surfing.

The body of water you’ll most likely find me on…

I can be found mostly on the great lakes during the summer. I like to paddle the ocean and freshwater springs in Florida.

Which boards I’m riding? Which one is my favorite? …

Hala Nass and Straight UP. No favorites love them equally. I want all the hala boards. For longer expeditions I prefer the Nass for speed and carrying gear. For fun on waves and rivers I prefer the straight up. It has quicker turning response and a little wider for stability. The carbon stringer on the straight up makes it feel like a hard board. Its a really nice addition to ISUPs

My next dream paddling adventure is…

Dream paddle adventure would be to ride in some extreme terrain with a group of friends and experienced paddlers. SUP a group of rapids or around a group of islands. Have a multiday trek on a foreign body of water with all expenses paid with your closest friends.

What I do when I am not paddling?

I am a nurse been practicing for about 9 years. If not providing healthcare services. I am hiking and or mountain biking with family and friends.

Browsing the web I discovered inflatable SUP’s that could fit into a backpack. Bingo. I haven’t turned back since. The thing I love most about SUP is the river community that has been so welcoming. Total strangers lent me boards, gear, and advice and have turned into good friends.  I’m also an adrenaline junkie. Nothing gets my heart pumping like exploring a new downriver whitewater run.

The body of water you’ll most likely find me on… The mighty Potomac just minutes from my home.

Which boards I’m riding? Which one is my favorite? … The board I ride most often is the Atcha 86. It’s my favorite for my local class III-IV run the Little Falls section of the Potomac. This nimble,  stable board turns on a dime and punches big wave trains and holes. The 12’6 Hala Nass is my go to for attainments, flatwater, and fast downriver runs up to class III.

My next dream paddling adventure is… One day I’d like to paddle the Colorado River through the Grand Canyon on a raft supported trip. Can’t imagine a better way to explore one of the natural wonders of our world.

What I do when I am not paddling?  If I’m not paddling chances are I’m working or the river is frozen over. I love the outdoors, snowboarding,  fishing, and hiking with my trusty canine companion Hannah. I also manage a full-service car wash in Washington D.C.

and exploring the banks of the Animas and Rio Grande Rivers. I have been playing on
rivers and water most of my life in canoes, rafts, dories, sailboats, and over the past 8
years SUPs. My first experience on a board was paddling my old windsurf board around
with a canoe paddle on a low-wind day 30 years ago on Navajo Lake.

The body of water you’ll most likely find me on… The Colorado or Gunnison rivers that
come together a few minutes from my home.

Which boards I’m riding? Which one is my favorite? … I discovered the Peño this spring
before runoff and had a blast surfing on the little waves on the Colorado. It made a dry
winter and low water super fun! But the 9’6” Atcha has been the most versatile, fun
board I have been paddling this season. I’ll be adding a Rado to my quiver for longer
adventures, heavier loads, and more dog companions.

My next dream paddling adventure is… I am really excited about multi-day adventures
in the rocky canyons of the Four Corners. Days spent exploring, connecting with these
beautiful spaces away from the rush of our complex modern world. The low impact,
super versatile, highly capable nature of Hala Gear SUPs make for almost endless

Why I love to SUP and how I discovered it…
Since childhood growing up in New York state, water was bliss. Swimming, canoeing, floating, dreaming I was an underwater creature, water has always been my happy place. Discovering kayaking around my chosen hometown of Gunnison, Colorado in my twenties, added that spark of adrenaline that really makes you feel alive and in the moment.

The Class 1-3 rivers around Gunnison are the perfect place to explore the balance of excitement and relaxation whether in a raft, on a kayak, or best yet on a SUP. To go with the flow is supremely freeing and purifying. Naturally, when stand up paddle boards became available at our local sporting goods store (shout out Gene Taylor’s!) I had to have one. My husband surprised me that Christmas with a new
inflatable. Yay!

That winter I took it to my other amazing hometown of Big Pine Key, Florida and began paddling the flat, backcountry waters of the Florida Keys. What an intimate and incredible way to connect with the marine life and near shore environment! So different from a kayak. Your full body extended straight up offers so much more perspective looking in and around the water. Much easier to spot baby sharks, turtles, dolphins, spotted eagle rays, sting rays, lobster, crabs, snapper, barracuda, tarpon, jacks and permit plus sponges, corals and more. The feeling of simply standing on water is amazing!

I love that stand up paddling can be a total body workout as well. But then you can also sit down. Lay down. Look up at the sky, clouds, birds. Just breathe. When I put yoga and meditation together with the natural floating environment, I and all became one. This inspiration, connection, peace, love, contentment, physical and mental balance that I found in nature had to be shared. My passion became to spread this SUP love.

I studied with the Colorado School of Yoga to earn my 200 hour yoga teacher certification. Then acquired WPA (World Paddle Association) Level 1 and 2 SUP Yoga teacher trainer certification with Tara at Lazy Dog in Key West which added a great deal of paddling technique and safety education to my toolbox. I am grateful to be able to teach paddle board yoga and SUP basics to other paddling and yoga enthusiasts including total newcomers to both.

Currently I balance my time on this blue planet between two beautiful, waterful places – the high mountain lakes, and rivers of Colorado and the ecologically diverse waters of the Florida Keys.

The body of water you’ll most likely find me on…
When in Big Pine Key, Florida, you’ll find me paddling among the magical mangroves and protected, shallow sand and grass flats, or the coral reef looking and listening for birds and marine life and peace.

Back in Colorado, I’m either floating the mellow whitewater of the Gunnison River or searching for paddling glass bliss at Blue Mesa Lake, Taylor Reservoir, and the pond in my backyard.

Which boards I’m riding? Which one is my favorite? …
Atcha 9’6, Carbon Straight Up, Asana, Radito
It’s hard to pick a favorite… depends what I’m doing of course.

Definitely LOVE the Atcha for the river – the maneuverability, stability and retractable
fin allows me to focus on the water and not the board while whitewater river paddling.

I LOVE the Carbon Straight Up and Asana for practicing and teaching yoga as well as flat
water cruising. Both very stable, track well, and nice grippy pads. Also love the added
stainless d-ring attachment points. My dog LOVES them all too!

My next dream paddling adventure is…
A paddle board yoga retreat in a serene, tropical place with lots of marine life, delicious, organic, local food, music, dancing and grateful people. Collection of plastic litter in the waterways would also be a part of the program. Maybe even a little wave to surf!

What I do when I am not paddling?
Besides paddling and yoga, my other loves are playing with and walking my dog Fin (he loves to SUP too!), fishing with my hubby, snorkeling, outdoor shuffleboard, downhill skiing, researching healthy living, gardening, good eating, enjoying conversations, fun, and music with great friends and family. And my un-eco addiction of slalom waterskiing. I also have to work, grocery shop, and clean the house.

Why I love to SUP and how I discovered it: I have always loved being in and around water and grew up canoeing, water skiing, and lifeguarding. When I was living in Denver I was trying to find a way to get outside for some stress relief without having to drive a long distance, which can be hard to do in a big city. After trying SUP in Florida on a family vacation, I knew that this could be the key to what I was looking for. I was also about to start yoga teacher training and once someone showed me a picture of paddleboard Yoga, I knew I had to try! I bought my first board then and haven’t looked back. I love how peaceful it is on the water, I feel like all my problems stay on shore when I head out for a paddle.

The body of water you’ll most likely find me on: Jackson lake in mancos state park. It’s really close to me so easy to pop up there after work for a quick evening paddle or fishing session with my husband.

Which boards am I riding? Favorite? I have the rado and the Radito. I am out on the lake more often than not, but I do love some river time as well! The Asana was not in stock or else I would have gone with one of those. I’ve been really digging the radito, it’s tbe perfect size for me and it maneuvers so well!

My next dream paddling adventure is: black canyon below the Hoover dam! I have permits and hope to go next March. 11 miles of river, crystal clear water, and hot springs?! I am so excited! Eventually I would really love to paddle an international river, maybe Costa Rica?

What I do when I’m not paddling: I work as a wildlife technician for the BLM and I also teach Hatha and aerial yoga. I have way too many outdoor hobbies! I love skiing, mountain biking, trail running, climbing, and hiking. I also just started playing with stained glass!

I love SUP for it’s versatility. I can explore waterways of all kind from a SUP and on whitewater it adds a giant dose of challenge and a minimal dose of risk. I love overnight trips with my inflatable boards because they haul alot of gear, can double as my mattress and can take me pretty much anywhere I want to go.

Why I love to SUP and how I discovered it…
I discovered SUP in the fall of 2016 because I needed to do a fall sport and I did not make JV volleyball. I tried paddleboarding and then I got addicted. There was something amazing about it that engulfed my life. Everytime I get off the river, I am so incredibly happy even if I didn’t have the best day. The adrenaline is addicting, while family of friends I’ve created because of whitewater make the experiences I have on the river priceless.

The body of water you’ll most likely find me on…
You’ll find my on the James River, my home town river that I practice of 3 times a week during the school year. It has great rapids ranging from class II to IV in high water.

Which boards I’m riding? Which one is my favorite? …
I’m currently riding the radito. It’s a super fun whitewater board that large enough to punch big waves, but is easily maneuverable that I can slide into eddies with ease.

My next dream paddling adventure is…
I would love to go to Patagonia someday and paddle those rivers! There’s something about those mountains and the water that mesmerize me.

What I do when I am not paddling?
I am a high school student and I enjoy climbing, ceramics, and being in nature.

Why I love to SUP and how I discovered it…
I knew of stand up paddle boarding long before I actually gave it a try. My first time on a board was in Grand Junction during a SUP demo day hosted by Summit Canyon Mountaineering. I didn’t fall off and I was instantly hooked!

I actually have this weird fear of falling in lakes, rivers and oceans because of the scary things below. I also used to be scared fast moving rivers and hate water going up my nose. I knew paddle boarding would be the way to get over those fears. So, I threw myself into the sport and now I have no problem falling in water. With extra swiftwater training am no longer afraid of fast moving rivers…for the most part. I do still hate water going up my nose.

Paddle boarding quickly became my vise, the thing between skiing and mountain biking which got me through the hot summers until ski season came again. Now, it’s the one thing I can’t wait to do, I am obsessed with it!

The body of water you’ll most likely find me on…
On Dolores and San Miguel rivers during runoff, on the high alpine lakes throughout the San Juan Mountains in the summer, and on the Lower Gunisson and Colorado rivers when I need to escape to the heat!

Which boards I’m riding? Which one is my favorite? …
The Radito … And, the Radito!!!

My next dream paddling adventure is…
Each and every opportunity I get to float the Lower Dolores or any endangered river for that matter. I would love to take a trip down the Escalante and Verde rivers soon!

What I do when I am not paddling?
Depending on the season, you will find me in the desert mountain biking, landing trout on the fly, hunting for shrooms, snoring in a hammock, sitting around a camp fire, skiing as much as possible and occasionally standing atop a 14er.

Why I love to SUP and how I discovered it… My first introduction to Stand-Up Paddleboarding was definitely unique. I was in the midst of learning how to become a raft guide on the James River and one of the veteran guides asked me to come out and try whitewater SUP with the Trinity School Outdoor Program. My high school schedule was hectic at the time but I made it out. I was thrown into class II and III whitewater without any prior SUP experience – I’ve been hooked ever since. Soon after, I began guiding commercial SUP trips (downriver/whitewater and eco-tours).

The body of water you’ll most likely find me on… You’ll almost certainly find me teaching SUP on the James River throughout the year and especially in the fall, spring, and summer.

Which boards I’m riding? Which one is my favorite?…  My favorite board in the Hala fleet is the Hala Nass. It lets me attain upstream through the technical rapids of the Upper James River and confidently deal with whitewater rescue situations white holding enough gear, snack, and water for twelve people (on a 2-3 hour trip). I can use the length and stability of the board for whitewater and flatwater races, knowing I have tons of speed underneath me.

My next dream paddling adventure is… I have been working on planning a couple East Coast, multi-day expeditions on my breaks from college. I’m very focused on progressing Riverside Outfitters’ (the company I work for) downriver SUP day-camp programming. Teaching kids how to clean rapids, surf standing waves, and be safe on the water is where I have the most fun.

What I do when I am not paddling? I’m a full-time college student, pursuing a BA in English with a minor in Children’s Literature from Longwood University. I love wakeboarding, wake surfing, and sailing whenever I’m not paddling.

Why I love to SUP and how I discovered it…
8 years ago I was 35 pounds heavier and a smoker. I had neglected my health while raising 4 kids and building a law practice in my 30s.  My wife read an article in the newspaper about this new sport called stand up paddle. She knew I used to surf and thought I would like it.  I went to the surf shop, rented a board and became instantly hooked after the first glide. I love SUP because I love the water.

The body of water you’ll most likely find me on…
The ocean.  Preferably surfing big waves.

Which boards I’m riding? Which one is my favorite? …
The 14’ Nass-T.  I’m currently training on it for SEAPADDLE NYC.  26 mile race around Manhattan.

My next dream paddling adventure is…
Paddling around Manhattan.  A bucket list item I will soon check off.

What I do when I am not paddling?
Prone surfing, Krav Maga and lawyering

Hometown: Quezon City, Philippines but I live in Boulder, CO now

Why I love SUP and how I discovered it: After moving to Boulder in 2009, I missed the ocean and water and found paddleboarding on lakes to quench my thirst. I love surfing, so I started bringing my paddleboards to Hawaii, Philippines, DR, Mexico –or any other locale with water and waves! One of my best memories was paddling in Coron, Palawan–part of the 7000 island archipelago of the Philippines and watching the rays and the sharks swimming under my board. My son and I almost dove off my paddleboard into a underwater commotion until we found that we were surrounded by black tip reef sharks!

The body of water you’ll most likely find me on: When I am home, Gross, Boulder or Union reservoir–although I am obsessing on getting to do more Whitewater river paddling. My goal is to river surf and ride more! I travel to the Philippines often, so you can find me surfing in Siargao Island or my mom’s local beach in Anvaya.

Which boards I’m riding?
Hala Gram for surfing waves; the Nass is my go-to for my work-outs and SUP-camping. For white water, the Rado and Radito–although the Radito is so burly and my new fave on the river since I am a white-water novice! The Hoss is a great family paddle fave–everyone loves the Hala Hoss.

My next dream paddling adventure is catching waves anywhere, but in 2018 to Portugal or Australia. I also would love to do a week-long adventure in the Boundary Waters, Minnesota.

What I do when I am not paddling: I am a mom of an energetic 11 yr old. In the wintertime, my family and I hit the slopes a lot! I definitely do since I am an amateur snowboard racer. For work, I am an emergency physician in the north Metro Denver area. In the warmer months, we climb, fish and hike.

Why I love to SUP and how I discovered it… As a long-time whitewater kayaker, I started seeing people paddling stand-up paddle boards down rivers and thought it looked fun. After paddling learning the basics, found out real fast I loved it because of the freedom it offered. With a Stand-up Paddle Board, you are no longer stuck in a craft it’s more like walking on flatwater or running across the whitewater.

The body of water you most likely find me on… Fresh water, only because I am land locked in Arkansas. Most of the time you will find me on the Illinois river at the Siloam Springs Kayak Park though.

Which boards I’m riding? Which one is my favorite? … Hala Atcha 86 & 96. My favorite
of the two is the 86. It will shred a wave like crazy & style your local whitewater run. The
86 Atcha is my go to board in any river enviroment.

My next dream paddling adventure is… Too many waterways in the world to choose from, so it would be the next one I’m on.

What I do when I am not paddling? I volunteer for the Arkansas Canoe Club; current position is Vice President of the NW Chapter. I’m also the Director of AOO Paddle Sports Academy. We offer a full line of swift water rescue, kayaking, SUP, Adaptive paddling & kids paddling/safety courses.

Why I love to SUP and how I discovered it…
I first discovered SUP in 2012 when I was living in the Georgian Bay area. Back then it was really fun just to get out on the crystal clear water and get away from the busy beaches. What I most enjoy about it now is the diversity that the sport can offer. I can get out for a social paddle on flatwater with friends, a SUP yoga sesh or an adreniline-pumping river run. Plus I have met some of the most fantastic people on my SUP adventures!

The body of water you’ll most likely find me on…
I like to take advantage of Banff National Park, a short drive from Calgary. The Bow River has some really nice, scenic stretches that are great for learning the ins and outs of River SUP. I’ve also been known to frequent Two Jack Lake.

Which boards I’m riding? …
The Radito on the river and Carbon Nass for longer day/overnight trips. They’re really going to round out my quiver this year and take my paddling to the next level!

My next dream paddling adventure is…
So many! The Bowron Lake circuit is high on my bucket list. It’s a 116 km chain of lakes,
normally completed in 6-10 days. I’m going to take on a few smaller trips first but hope
to complete it in 2019!

What I do when I am not paddling?
Hiking, camping, climbing, cooking and trying not to kill my houseplants.

Why I love to SUP and how I discovered it…  I started paddle boarding in the summer of 2014.  A good friend and his wife purchased 2 inflatable boards for cruising the local rivers.  She became pregnant shortly afterwards and couldn’t go as much, so I began paddling with my friend on the town section of the French Broad.  One day we decided to try Section 9 of the French Broad which features class 2 and 3 whitewater. We randomly ran into another group of paddle boarders at the put in who showed us down.  We were immediately hooked. I purchased my first SUP a few months later and began paddling as much as possible. I couldn’t get enough! Through the summer months I typically paddle 3-4 times per week.  During the winter I get out as often as possible and as weather allows. Whitewater is my main interest but I also paddle flat water from time to time and love to ocean surf whenever I have the chance.

I found SUP when I was going through a tough time in my life.  The new passion I discovered in paddling had an amazingly positive impact on me both mentally and physically.  It helped me pull through and gave me a whole new outlook on things. I love exploring all the beautiful rivers and creeks around Asheville. It truly is a year round paddling paradise!

The body of water you’ll most likely find me on…  French Broad River, Nolichucky River, Laurel River

Which boards I’m riding? Which one is my favorite? … I’ve tried all the Hala boards, but my favorite is the 8’6” Atcha. I also really enjoy the playa for ocean cruising and flat water paddling.

What I do when I am not paddling? I’m a musician and regularly gig around Asheville and the surrounding areas with my band, Brushfire Stankgrass. I love playing soccer, hiking, and spending time outdoors any way possible.

My next dream paddling adventure is… We are traveling to Grand Cayman early in 2019! I’m looking forward to paddling around the island and exploring the reefs and ocean life.

Why I love to SUP and how I discovered it…  Being on a SUP works the whole body and I have never had so much fun working out. Really love being in the ocean and surfing and stand up paddle surfing have allowed me to do that all the time.

How I got started. I was a surfer and my neighbor invited me to go for SUP paddle in the river . It was fun and challenging and I really like standing and being able to see nature, dolphins, and manatees etc. As I progressed and started paddling and surfing in the ocean, I was all in.

The body of water you’ll most likely find me on…  The Atlantic ocean on the beachs of south Patrick in Brevard county Florida

Which boards I’m riding? Which one is my favorite? … I ride the Hala Gram, a great board when the waves get peaky and fast. I also have the Hala Playa, great to ride when nice long board waves are rolling in.

As for my favorite, I would say the Carbon Playa. The fiber glass stringer makes it ride like a rigid board and I can take it anywhere.

My next dream paddling adventure is…  Love to surf Pan Dulce on the Osa Peninsula In Costa Rica, hope to hit again real soon. Also I will be surfing the Eisbach (standing wave) in Munich, Germany with my good friend Eric Enrique who is also an ambassador for Hala.

What I do when I am not paddling? When I’m not in the water , I’m launching rockets at the Kennedy Space Center.

Why I love to SUP and how I discovered it… I was once a pretty avid touring kayaker, but was growing tired of the perspective and back pain from sitting down for long periods. I was so convinced I would enjoy SUP touring that I purchased my Hala Hoss before ever paddling a SUP board. I have been hooked ever since my first multi-night paddle. I really enjoy the perspective I get from standing and I love the Hoss’ ability to haul tons of gear.
The body of water you’ll most likely find me on… I absolutely love paddling the wild rivers here in Central Texas. My favorite of the Central Texas rivers is definitely the San Marcos.
Which boards I’m riding? Which one is my favorite? … I paddle both the Hala Hoss and Hala Hoss Carbon. The Carbon is definitely my favorite. I really believe the Carbon is the perfect all around board.
My next dream paddling adventure is… My paddling buddy and I will be paddling the entire 75 miles of the San Marcos in September for what we believe will be the first self-supported SUP descent of the San Marcos.
What I do when I am not paddling? As Biologist and Dive Safety Officer I am almost always around or under the water. Diving takes up most of my non-working and non-paddling time.
